Chapter Four: The Lingering Curse

The curse was no longer confined to Oka. It seeped outward, slow but relentless, like water finding cracks in stone. The villagers watched helplessly as the forest grew thicker, its roots pushing through the soil, curling around huts, and strangling crops.
At first, they thought it was only their burden. But then came the messengers—travelers from neighboring towns, their faces pale, their voices trembling. They spoke of roots breaking through roads, of whispers echoing in the night, of children waking with glowing veins.
The elders gathered in the square, their voices heavy with despair. Elder Olumide spoke: “This is no longer our curse alone. The forest spreads. It will not stop until it has taken everything.”
From Oka to Lag
News traveled faster than roots. Radios crackled with reports of highways swallowed by vines, of skyscrapers trembling as roots burst through concrete. Television broadcasts showed soldiers firing flamethrowers into the forest, but the flames died instantly, swallowed by damp soil.
One evening, the villagers gathered around a small radio, its static filling the air. The announcer’s voice was tense:
“We interrupt this broadcast… strange phenomena have been reported across the nation. Forests are appearing where none existed before. Whispers have been heard in Lag, Abu, and beyond. Scientists are baffled. Authorities urge calm.”
The broadcast cut to silence. Then, faintly, Ada’s voice filled the airwaves: “The forest is eternal.”
The World Swallowed Whole
The villagers gasped. Mothers clutched their children, fathers clenched their fists. The elders bowed their heads, knowing the truth: Ada’s curse had become the world’s curse.
From orbit, Earth was seen covered in green. Satellites captured images of continents consumed by endless forest, cities swallowed whole, oceans choked by roots. The world watched in horror as the curse spread, unstoppable, inevitable.
In Oka, the whispers grew louder. They circled the village, pressing against the walls, slipping through cracks. Children woke screaming, claiming Ada stood at their windows, her mask glowing faintly.
The villagers prayed, but the forest did not listen. The curse lingered, spreading like smoke, suffocating everything in its path.
