The curse spread slowly at first, like a sickness no one could name. It began with the soil. Roots broke through the ground, glowing faintly in the moonlight, curling around doorways and creeping beneath walls. Livestock vanished, dragged into the shadows by unseen hands. Chickens were found lifeless, their bodies tangled in vines that had not been there the night before.
The villagers whispered that Ada was responsible. Some claimed they saw her standing at the forest’s edge, her mask gleaming faintly, her body unmoving while the trees bent toward her like worshippers. Others swore they heard her voice in the night, whispering promises of eternity.
The Arrogance of Science
Outsiders arrived soon after. They came with machines, notebooks, and the arrogance of science. They spoke of phenomena, of natural explanations, of research that would unravel the mystery. They set up camps at the forest’s edge, their tents glowing with artificial light.
But the forest did not care for their instruments. Their machines broke, their notes were lost, and whispers followed them into their tents.
One researcher, a man named Dr. Hassan, wrote in his journal: “The forest is not passive. It resists. It learns.” His words were found days later, scrawled in frantic handwriting, but Dr. Hassan himself was gone.
Ada’s spirit haunted them. Her mask glowed in the ruins of their camp, her voice echoing through the trees. “You cannot study eternity,” she whispered. “You can only join it.”
The Hunger Deepens
The villagers coughed as roots crawled into their homes, curling around doorways and windows. Children woke screaming, their veins glowing faintly, their eyes wide with terror. Mothers prayed, but the whispers drowned their voices.
One night, Bamidele returned from the forest edge, his face pale, his eyes hollow. He spoke in a trembling voice: “She is not Ada anymore. She is the forest. And the forest is hungry.”
The elders gathered, their faces grim. Elder Olumide spoke softly, his voice heavy with despair: “The shrine has claimed her. She is no longer ours. She belongs to the forest, and now the forest belongs to her.”
The villagers listened, but unease spread like smoke. The curse was no longer a story whispered around fires—it was a reality pressing against their walls, seeping into their dreams.
That night, the whispers grew louder. They circled the village, pressing against the walls, slipping through cracks. Children woke screaming, claiming Ada stood at their windows, her mask glowing faintly.
The forest had begun its vanishing act. It was not only taking people—it was taking the world itself.
