Chapter Two: The Shrine of Hands
The morning after Ada’s disappearance, Oka awoke to a silence that felt heavier than the air itself. The roosters did not crow. The dogs did not bark. Even the wind seemed reluctant to stir the leaves. Ada’s hut stood empty, her bed untouched, her lantern missing.
Children whispered among themselves, claiming they had seen her walking into the forest the night before, her flame flickering like a dying star swallowed by the trees. Mothers hushed them quickly, but the fear in their eyes betrayed the truth—they believed the children.
The Claimed Soul
The elders gathered in the square, their faces grim. Elder Olumide, his voice cracked with age, muttered: “She has been claimed. The forest remembers, and it has taken her.”
The villagers listened, but unease spread like smoke. Ada was not the first to vanish, but she was the boldest. If the forest could claim her, what hope did anyone else have?
Days passed, and travelers spoke of hearing her voice among the whispers. At times it begged, at times it warned, and at times it laughed—a hollow, echoing sound that carried through the trees. The villagers avoided the forest edge, but the whispers drifted into their dreams.
At night, mothers clutched their children close, listening to faint echoes that seemed to seep through the walls: “Stay forever…” The words were soft, but they carried the weight of inevitability.
The Hunter's Tale
One evening, Bamidele, a hunter known for his courage, returned from the forest edge pale and trembling. His bow hung useless at his side, and his eyes darted like a man pursued.
He spoke in a broken voice: “I saw her. Ada. She stood among the trees. Her eyes glowed faintly, and her face was hidden behind a mask of bone. She did not move, but the forest moved around her—branches bent, roots shifted, as if she commanded them.”
The villagers gasped. Some wept, others cursed. The elders exchanged fearful glances. Elder Olumide spoke again, his voice low: “The shrine has chosen her. She is no longer human. She is bound to the forest.”
That night, the whispers grew louder. They circled the village, pressing against the walls, slipping through cracks. Children woke screaming, claiming Ada stood at their windows, her mask glowing faintly.
The villagers prayed, but the forest did not listen. The shrine had claimed its guardian, and Ada’s transformation had begun.
