The Drum-Eater – A Nigerian Mystery Horror Short Story (Part 3)

 The Drum-Eater: Part 3
The shadow’s form thickened, its edges bleeding into the night like ink spilled across the stars. The villagers dared not breathe. Even the crickets had gone mute.
It stepped forward, and the earth seemed to recoil. The footprints it left behind smoked faintly, as though the soil itself was burning from contact. Its eyes — if they could be called eyes — were hollow pits, glowing with a dim, red pulse.
The Ancestral Warning
Mama Nkechi clutched her amulet, whispering prayers older than Shagari itself. But the creature’s voice cut through her words, vibrating the marrow of our bones:
“Your drums have been my summons. For centuries, I have listened. Tonight, silence has freed me.”
The villagers shuddered. Silence was not safety — it was surrender. The drums had been our shield, our heartbeat, our defiance against the forest’s hunger. Without them, we were exposed.
The creature raised a clawed hand, and the lantern flames bent toward it, stretching unnaturally. Shadows twisted into shapes of faces — faces of those long buried in Shagari’s soil. They screamed silently, mouths open wide, trapped in the dark.
I felt my own voice trying to leave me, pulled toward the abyss. The horror was not just in its form, but in its power to unravel what made us human.
And then, Mama Nkechi spoke again, louder this time: “It is the Drum-Eater. The one our ancestors warned of. If it feasts on silence, it will never leave.”
